Bespoke concert attire for ensembles

Small ensembles, regardless of what instruments or voices they consist, face the challenge of finding outfits for the stage that are both practical and visually cohesive. Whether matching or as ‘variations on a theme’: stage attire that is elegant, but also comfortable to wear whilst performing, is fundamental for successful concerts.

In our quest to create their perfect concert dress, we support our artists with our specialist craftsmanship, our own practical experience of performing music and a keen understanding of the clothing needs of musicians on stage.

Through creative dialogue, we take into account the wishes of each individual artist and weave them together into a harmonious design in which the personality of each musician is reflected, along with their instrument and their specific needs, whilst simultaneously creating a cohesive visual whole that reflects the ensemble’s unique identity.

Marillon Couture and the Calmus Ensemble

In collaboration with the renowned Leipzig vocal quintet, Calmus Ensemble, we developed new stage outfits in 2022 which are visually harmonious yet tailored to each ensemble member’s individual needs in the finer details.

The result was two distinct yet complementary concert dresses, along with matching accessories for the gentlemen.

Concert dresses for the ladies

These floor-length concert dresses are made from a soft, flowing triacetate fabric and can be styled in different ways using the detachable belts: in gold for a splash of colour, or in the simple, elegant blue of the dresses themselves.

The dresses are crease-resistant and can be machine-washed at 30 degrees.

“Our new outfits from Marillon Couture are a dream: tailor-made especially for us, they are truly unique and real eye-catchers. Throughout our collaboration, Maxi Lasheras was brimming with ideas and creativity, while always ensuring her clients’ voices were heard. And on top of that, she is a perfectionist through and through – incredibly quick and meticulous. For us, one thing is certain: these won’t be the last outfits we’ll have made by her!”

Accessories for the men

The men’s accessories, made of gold or blue-and-gold-striped silk, coordinate with the ladies’ dresses. The blue ties are made from the same midnight-blue triacetate used for the dresses.

The two sides of the pocket squares are differently coloured – striped and plain gold – to allow for spontaneous variation.

Marillon Couture and Trio Orelon

We had the pleasure of designing concert outfits in a noble burgundy for the Orelon Trio. These can be easily combined with their existing black garments. The fabrics used included virtually crease-resistant triacetate with a subtle sheen and comfortable stretch, sheer chiffon and iridescent wild silk.

For the two gentlemen in the trio, we tailored bespoke shirts made from burgundy triacetate, with subtle differences in the details. The pianist is wearing a design featuring Swarovski buttons, asymmetrical cuffs and integrated chiffon pleats for greater freedom of movement. The cellist’s shirt, with its concealed placket and chiffon-covered details, is specially tailored to the practical requirements of his instrument.

For the violinist, a pair of wide-leg trousers were fashioned from the same fabric, complemented by flowing chiffon godets and a wrapped belt of wild silk, creating a soft transition to the black top. In this way, the ensemble of outfits combines functionality, comfort and individuality to form a cohesive visual whole.

“Working with Maxi has been a particularly enriching experience for us. She has designed bespoke outfits for our ensemble, tailored to all our individual needs. Our collaboration was creative and very personal, and we feel extremely confident and comfortable in our new concert attire. It combines timeless elegance with our individual tastes and is regularly praised by our audience.”

Useful information regarding bespoke concert attire for ensembles

Here you will find specific details regarding concert wear for ensembles. We would be happy to discuss your specific wishes, requirements and all further details during an introductory meeting.

How does Marillon Couture develop a cohesive look for ensembles?

A unified appearance is always created through close consultation with the individual ensemble members. In doing so, we take into account both the musical identity of the ensemble as a whole and the individual requirements, roles and preferences of each ensemble member.

Can individual preferences be accommodated within a unified concept?
Depending on the group, the preferences and requirements for ensemble clothing can vary considerably. Some ensembles prefer standardised, uniform attire, while others favour an overall visual concept that takes each member’s individual personality into account. The latter results in a variety of garments that nevertheless form a cohesive whole. Depending on which concept you choose, the scope for individual expression may vary.
How can the collaboration work when ensemble members live far apart?
Even across long distances, we develop bespoke solutions for design coordination, the taking of measurements and all organisational processes. Marillon Couture caters for ensembles from near and far. We can organise the collaboration in such a way that, despite different locations, the uncomplicated creation of your ensemble’s concert attire is perfectly possible.
How much time would we need to allow for the creation of our new ensemble outfits?
The duration of our collaboration depends on the amount of work involved in each individual case, as well as on the logistical challenges to be overcome. If an ensemble is based locally, fittings can be arranged more quickly; if some or all the members live further away, it may take more time or require creative logistical solutions. We will discuss the timeline for your project openly at the outset, so you can plan reliably.
What budget should we allow for the production of our ensemble attire?
The costs are intrinsically linked to the materials and the labour involved, so it is not possible to give a general estimate. At the start of our collaboration, we will set out the financial framework transparently in the form of a detailed quote, so that you can plan your budget with confidence.
Is our ensemble’s new clothing tax-deductible?
Whether the costs can be claimed for tax purposes depends, amongst other things, on the specific design and whether the clothing is used exclusively for professional purposes. As we are not authorised to provide tax advice, we recommend that you clarify the situation in advance with your accountant or the relevant tax authority.
Can concert outfits made by Marillon Couture be added to or altered at a later date?

Very few musicians want to wear exactly the same outfit evening after evening. When designing new stage attire for ensembles, we naturally ensure that it can be combined as flexibly as possible: either with existing pieces or with future additions.

Often, the overall look can be altered quite easily, simply by adding small details or accessories that can be applied as optional extras. Another important consideration is the need to adapt stage attire to the varying temperatures in concert venues. Here, for example, a variety of top or jacket options can be incorporated from the outset. Depending on the time and financial resources available, such measures can be implemented gradually, or an existing set of concert outfits can be extended at a later date.

Even in the event of changes to an ensemble’s personnel, we can reproduce the relevant outfits for new members. If you do wish for any alterations or additions at any point, please do not hesitate to contact us.
